Juan Martin Del Potro announced on Friday that he was ending his season early after struggling to make a comeback from a wrist injury.

The Argentine player, who won the 2009 US Open missed all but three of the season's tournaments because of the injury, which eventually required surgery.

Del Potro played in the Australian Open at the start of the year and did not make his return until the Thailand Open late last month.

However, the 22-year-old made a first-round exit and suffered the same fate when he subsequently played in Tokyo.

"I have decided to end my 2010 season in order to train hard for two months and start 2011 in top shape," Del Potro, whose ranking has fallen from fourth to 36th in recent months, said via Twitter
