Sunday's Finals

I am not going to be around today to watch any of the tennis.  I am off to Anfield to watch Liverpool v Chelsea.

Valencia

Can the lucky loser go all the way?  Can he beat the 10% owner of the tournament, David Ferrer?

This will be there 2nd meeting, the first was earlier this year in Barcelona where Ferrer came out the winner.

ATP Preview with all the stats here

Basel

Over in Basel it is déjà vu as Federer again meets Djokovic in the final.

Today will be meeting #18 with Roger leading 11-6.  Their last meeting was the semi-final in New York when Roger had MP but Novak came through.

Tennis round-up - Valencia semi finals

Well unlike in Basel we have a surprised finalist here in Valencia.  Step forward Marcel Granollers.

For the 2nd consecutive week we have a lucky loser into an ATP final.  He overcame an out of sorts Simon in 2 sets to set up a clash with fellow Spaniard David Ferrer after he dispatched Robin Soderling in 3 sets.

Tennis previews - Valencia Semi-finals

Valencia

First up is the unseeded clash between former World # 6 Gilles Simon & lucky loser Marcel Granollers.  This is the 3rd meeting between the 2 and the first since the US Open of 2008.  Simon is working his way back from a season interupted by knee injuries but he has managed to bag a title this year, Metz in September.  Granollers is hoping to match the run of another lucky loser, Haider-Maurer last week in Vienna, and make it to his 2nd ATP final (d. Blake in Houston 08)

The 2nd clash is one worthy of the final.  Local hero David Ferrer takes on #2 seed Robin Soderling.  This is meeting # 12 and they have shared the spoils in their last 2 recent meetings (Beijing & Shanghai).  Whilst Robin is safely at the World Tour Finals in London at the end of the month David is still not certain of qualification.  A final slot or even a win will go a long way to securing his place.  He is also a shareholder in this event and was born in Valencia so he should be highly motivated!

Thursday's Tennis previews

Will today prove to be as shocking as yesterday?

Basel - ATP

Cilic is the player in danger today given his woeful recent results.  I fancy Nalbandian to take this match.
Gasquet v Kamke could be a good one if Tobias continues on from his result yesterday.
No problems for Nole (fingers crossed)

Valencia - ATP

Now my pick in the MTL suicide game  is Davydenko.  He is so up & down that I am tempted top change to Granollers.  Anyway hopefully Davy will not implode when taking on Chela, they are first up on Centre.
Soderling & Ferrer should not have too much trouble making it through their matches.
It is the final match that will hopefully be a cracker.  Monfils has vastly improved over the past months but so has Stan.  Both can play some nice stuff though equally then can have some horror too.  I guess that is why i am looking forward to it, i just can't call the match.

Valencia preview

The Valencia tournament was reborn in 2009, transitioning from a spring clay court event to an indoor hard court ATP World Tour 500 tournament held in the second-to-last week of the regular season. With its new calendar position, the Valencia Open serves as a prime battleground for the men’s best tennis players as they attempt to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Last year the title was taken by Andy Murray as he beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2.  Murray will be looking to defend another title and add to his 2 titles of 2010.
A strong field also includes Robin Soderling, who is making his debut in Valencia, local favorite and part investor in the tournament David Ferrer & both of last years semi finalists, Nikolay Davydenko & Fernando Verdasco.
